The latest round of KORUS amendment talks between the U.S. and South Korea appear to have made little progress, and seem set to drag on throughout 2018. The U.S. remains focused on cutting the trade deficit and the automotive sector. The Korean side meanwhile appears to have tied the talks to its WTO complaint regarding the U.S. section 201 tariff process. Yet, the South Korean trade surplus vs. the U.S. is falling of its own volition, having dropped to the lowest in January since August 2011.
