The Senate’s approval of Robert Lighthizer as U.S. Trade Representative should allow the process of renegotiating NAFTA to begin. Should the administration of President Donald Trump kick off the process on May 15, it would need to consult with Congress on its plans through August 13. There are several trade reports due at the same time that may influence discussions. The Omnibus report on causes of the deficit is due by June 29, while the “section 232” reviews of steel and aluminum imports may also arrive.
