Vertical consolidation in the logistics industry has continued with container-line Maersk acquiring customs broker Vandegrift as part of its integrated service offering strategy. Vandegrift expanded its volumes handled on U.S.-inbound seaborne routes by 43.3% in 2018 compared to 2017. Potential losers from the acquisition include Maersk’s competitors that Vandegrift will presumably no longer allocate business to. In 2018 CMA-CGM – which is also pursuing a vertical consolidation strategy with Ceva Logistics – handled 19.9% of Vandegrift’s volumes on U.S. inbound routes.
