Maersk Looks To Squeeze Competitors in Growing Fruit Trade Business

Maersk’s Latin America specialist container-line, Hamburg Sud, has launched a seasonal shipping service for Peruvian exports of mangoes and grapes to the U.S. That comes against the backdrop of increasing demand for refrigerated transportation. Peru’s exports of fruit climbed 24.0% on a year earlier in the 12 months to Oct. 31 to reached $26.9 billion. Shipments to the U.S. represented 35.7% of the total. U.S. imports of fruit from all suppliers climbed 10.0% over the same period, and while Maersk held an 11.2% market share that was well behind market leader Transfrut at 18.8%.
