Maersk’s latest report on the Brazilian shipping market sees a slow recovery in 2017, with imports rising just 1%. That slow growth will hold back export expansion as the company sees the cost of sending empty equipment there as being too expensive. Imports have begun to increase, with an 18% increase in January though this is not a firmly established trend. Another issue may be the high level of consolidation in the market, which Maersk’s purchase of Hamburg Sud will increase further.
