Maersk Takes a Step Closer To HamSu in Brazil, South Africa The Next Hurdle

Maersk has received the go-ahead from Brazil’s competition authority, CADE, for its acquisition of Hamburg Sud. The investigation had been extended due to its complexity, before being approved after Maersk agreed to sell its cabotage business to CMA-CGM. It still requires approval from authorities in four jurisdictions including South Africa. The latter may be a problem given the hawkish stance authorities there took regarding the Japanese shippers’ new merged entity, ONE. In the meantime Maersk is set to dominate the Brazilian market.
