Maruti Suzuki’s S-Presso SUV will be the first Indian designed and made vehicle exported from the country. Exports already include models designed elsewhere in the world but produced in India including those by Hyundai and Ford. While the S-Presso may vindicate the “Make in India” industrial policy, MII’s widespread use of tariffs carries the risk that its automotive industry may eventually face retaliatory duties in other countries.
