The USDA has delayed a decision to allow Colombian exports of avocados to the U.S. The biggest loser from the approval would be Mexican suppliers including Mission Produce and Calavo. While they accounted for 91% of U.S. imports in 2016, shipments fell 2% vs. 2015 as they lost share to growers in Chile and the Dominican Republic. Additionally, global exports from Mexico fell for the last seven months of 2016 compared to a year earlier. Avocados are also a top 50 export from Mexico to the U.S., so will doubtless get caught up in NAFTA talks.
