Obama-Era China Aluminum Case Sidelined as Annual Imports Hit New High

China 3047 Materials - Metals/Mining 792 Metals - Aluminum 270 Tariffs 1865 U.S. 5398 WTO 114

The USTR’s annual report on WTO trade actions to Congress does not include an Obama-era case against Chinese primary aluminum. That’s not a surprise given the Trump administration has its own “section 232” case in progress. While that will be quicker than a WTO case it is still running later than expected. In the meantime U.S. aluminum imports continue to rise. They increased 32% on a year earlier in the second quarter, Panjiva data shows, including a 51% jump in shipments from China. On a trailing 12 month basis those have now reached their highest since at least 2009.
