The acquisition of footwear maker Oboz by retailer Kathmandu in March had a significant earn-out requirement. Since then there has been a marked surge in activity in Oboz’s operations, shown by a 131.0% increase in U.S. seaborne imports vs. a year earlier in the three months to Oct. 31 vs. 27.8% in the prior three month period. There are significant supply chain risks – Oboz relied on two Vietnamese suppliers for 88.6% of its imports since January 2017. Importing from Vietnam though may prove an advantage should the Trump administration launch a section 301 review of Chinese labor rights...
