Stevedores’ Payrolls Return to Growth While Warehouses Beat Bikes

Mode - Seaborne 1845 Theme - Employment 56 U.S. 5399

Employment in the U.S. logistics industry climbed 2% in November vs. a year earlier to reach 5.1 million. That continues a run of growth going back to July 2010 and continued the outperformance vs. the economy more broadly. Warehousing outpaced courier growth, with the latter expanding at its slowest since January 2016. Maritime employment levels continued to recover, growing 1.7% vs. an unchanged level the prior month. Longer-term though port automation remains a threat, and may be a cause of labor strife in 2018.
