Sumitomo’s Sponge Supplies Face Squeeze as National Security Case Launched

The U.S. Commerce Department has launched a national security based tariff review (section 232) of titanium sponge imports at the behest of Titanium Metals Corp. Titanium sponge is a precursor for most titanium products and is used across aerospace and industrial processes. The case faces many complications. The Commerce Department had determined in 2017 that dumping of sponge had not harmed the U.S. industry. Legislation is underway through Congress to restrict the use of the section 232 reviews.
