The U.S. trade in goods deficit reached $74.6 billion in May, up 13.6% year over year and the fourth highest since the financial crisis. That was the result of a 2.5% drop in exports being outpaced by a 2.6% increase in imports and will do nothing to lessen the hawkish stance of the Trump administration at the G20 Summit from Jun. 28. The decline in exports has been most marked in food, which fell 9.1%, though the 3.8% slide in capital goods exports would suggest a mixture of tariffs and a global slowdown are hurting American businesses.
