The Scottish government wants to secure lower tariffs for whisky exports following the U.K.’s exit from the EU. These can be up to 150%. In the case of China tariffs are equivalent to $7.5 per liter. British whisky accounted for 87% of the total, so it is more likely to be a change in tastes rather than tariffs that is needed to boost growth. In the U.S. it is more about competition with other brands. Imports from the U.K. account for 65% of the total, followed by Irish and Canadian products, but have suffered a 9% slump in demand in the past quarter.
