Global sales of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids surged 44.7% higher year over year in June, S&P Global Platts data shows, bringing the 2Q growth to 27.6% or 2.32 million vehicles in the past 12 months. That included a 51.2% surge in sales in the U.S. in June versus a year earlier with 37,818 vehicles sold, equating to a 26.0% expansion in 2Q.

U.S. exports – including Tesla’s Model S, X and 3 as well as General Motors’ Bolt, Panjiva data for seaborne exports shows – climbed 80% year over year in June and by 51.5% in 2Q. The 2Q shipments featured a 34.4% drop in exports to China, largely due to the section 301 duties that became effective in July 2018. That was offset by increased shipments to Europe – up 4.7x on a year earlier in part due to the roll out of the Model 3 in Europe.
Imports meanwhile surged 120.3% year over year suggesting that imported electric vehicles took market share from Tesla. Vehicles shipped from Europe – potentially including the Jaguar’s I-Pace and Audi’s eTron – came to account for 57.4% of imports in 2Q from 9.1% a year earlier.
