Excessive pollution in the Bangkok area has led the Thai government to shut thousands of factories temporarily. That may cause significant disruptions to supply chains – particularly those that are global in nature – that are dependent on the area. Exports from the region had been steadily expanding. U.S. seaborne imports from the 100 km around Bangkok climbed 7.3% year over year in 2018. The largest firm depending on the area for U.S. sourcing is Samsung Electronics, which accounted for 21.3% of U.S.-bound exports from the area in 2018, while others include Honda Motor and Ebro Foods.
