Thai Trade Surprise May Be Washed Out By U.S. Regulatory Disappointment

Thailand’s 12% export increase in June was the fourth straight increase, and well ahead of economists’ forecasts of 8%. A 19% rise in electronics exports helped, while U.S. bound exports also increased 12%, Panjiva data shows. That growth may be at risk, however. While Thailand is not a top 10 contributor to the U.S. trade deficit, its growth has been driven by home appliances exports. In June exports of washing machines (up from near zero), refrigerators (20x higher) and ovens (increased by 21%) all contributed to growth.
