China may be developing a two-pronged approach to trade in 2017, having seen total trade fall 10% in the past 12 months vs. 2013. It is looking to build multilateral deals in Asia, with RCEP talks this week appearing to have made progress. The country will also look to take “necessary measures” to ensure tariff rules against it, especially by the EU and U.S., are updated to allow for its accession to market economy status under WTO rules. These are due to take effect from December 11.
