U.S. Deficit Done a Disservice by Olympic Services

Trade Balance 935 U.S. 5399

The U.S. goods-and-services deficit was 4% larger than economists expected in August. This contrasts with the advance goods-only deficit published on September 29 that was 6% smaller than expected. This likely reflects a $1.2 billion increase in intellectual property services associated with the Olympics. Panjiva analysis shows revisions to the advance goods numbers reached their highest since October 2015. Initial seaborne import shipments for September suggest a 2% growth in goods imports is possible.
