Maersk and MSC will update their 2M Alliance services this fall, adding capacity from Antwerp, Rotterdam and Bremerhaven to Newark, Savannah and Charleston. The routine service update is likely driven by rising demand, as was the case for Maersk’s Med-Montreal service released earlier this year. Aggregate containerized freight between the three EU ports and those in the U.S. climbed by just 4% in 2Q 2018. Yet, volumes handled by Maersk and MSC surged 11% higher. Further upside may be limited given the two carriers accounted for 37% of volumes in the second quarter.
