Apple Ponders Supplier Switch as Chinese Memory Chip Imports Hit a Record

Apple is negotiating a deal to buy NAND flash memory chips from state-supported Yangtze Memory from a forthcoming factory in China. The demand for semiconductors in China is growing rapidly as device manufacturing expands – exports of PCs climbed 15% in 2017 and mobile phones by 10% (including a record in December). That has led to a 13% rise in semiconductor imports broadly, with a 39% surge in imports of memory chips in particular to reach $89 billion in total.
