Big Boats, Not Bigger Terminals, To Drive Oakland’s Steady Growth

Corp - Ports 908 Mode - Containerized 1523 Mode - Seaborne 1845 U.S. 5398

The Port of Oakland’s five year development plan calls for a 1.6% annualized growth in handling to reach 2.6 million TEUs in 2022. That’s largely the result of a steady expansion in average ship sizes, and follows growth of just 0.4% annually in the past five years. Export handling had been declining until recently, but growth will be more a function of the local economy than port facilities. Oakland has consistently been the ninth largest port complex tracked by Panjiva, and while it is falling behind Norfolk it is catching Charleston in the past year.
