China may increase duties on sugar imports to 95% from 50% this year in a decision due May 22. That would follow a delayed decision due to case “complexities”. Panjiva data shows Chinese imports fell 23% in the 12 months to February 28, but jumped 102% in February alone due to a 150% bounce in Brazilian shipments. Higher duties could leave Brazilian producers looking to replace the 6% of sales that go to China. The U.S. market may be a target due to disagreements between the U.S. and Mexico over the Sugar Suspension Agreement.
