Busan Losing Share to Peers in South Korea Container Handling

The Port of Busan may be losing market share to its smaller peers, Inchon and Kwangyang, in handling South Korean container traffic. Total handling across the country increased 3% in the three months to January 31, whereas Busan’s dropped 1%. This was partly due to lower transshipments, with its underlying outbound traffic rising 6%. The other ports’ international traffic increased 14% however. There may be more to come. Busan is more heavily exposed to the U.S., where Panjiva data shows shipments from South Korea dropped 4% on a year earlier in February.
