Container handling through the port of Charleston climbed 8% on a year earlier in October, making for a 12th month of growth out of the past 13 (aside from August’s hurricane interruption). Export growth of 8% outpaced imports, echoing the pattern seen in Savannah and Norfolk. The import growth of 3% was driven by shipments from China, which rose 13%. Diversions through the Panama Canal helped, as will the handling of larger vessels. The latter will likely continue to drive growth as new infrastructure is installed.
