The potential for fruit exports from the EU to China is being held back by shipping capacity according to industry sources. There’s plenty of new reefer investment in the industry, but it may not be being attracted to the right routes. Chinese fruit imports grew 9% in the 12 months to November 30 to reach $6.2 billion. EU suppliers only achieved a 2% market share combined of those imports, vs. Thailand at 18% and Chile at 17%. That may reflect what is being supplied – i.e. local tastes – rather than logistics.
