China steel controls may barely ripple through Mexican supply chains

China 3048 Materials - Metals/Mining 792 Metals - Steel 543 Mexico 928

Latin American steel makers are looking to capitalize on reduced imports as the Chinese government cuts back production capacity according to industry association Alacero. The impact may be minimal given Chinese suppliers only accounted for 2.6% of Mexican imports of basic steel in the 12 months to April 30, down from a peak of 5.6% in the 12 months to June 2015. A recent decline in shipments of 31.6% year over year in the three months to April 30 was largely due to a 93.0% slump in imports linked to Baosteel.
