The Chinese government has approved imports of 15 GMO crops across corn, soybeans, cotton, canola and sugarbeet. Panjiva data shows Chinese imports have increased rapidly, with soybean imports rising 38% in the three months to April 30 as an example. The GMO approval may therefore be born of an attempt to diversify supplies. The move may also help with the “100 day” trade improvement arrangements with the U.S. These aim to increase U.S. exports, which accounted for 39% of the $42 billion of Chinese imports of the five crop groups covered by the new GMO arrangements in the past 12 months....
