Initial port data for China at the end of 2017 carries mixed messages. COSCO Shipping Ports saw a 6% rise in activity at its 22 mainland China and Hong Kong ports in December, the 17th straight month of growth. Activity through Hong Kong’s ports meanwhile fell by 11%, making the third straight drop and the fastest rate of decline since July 2016. Looking into 2018 the challenge for all Chinese maritime ports will be the rise of rail as an alternative solution for shipping to Europe.
