The EU is applying anti-dumping duties on Chinese steel exports of up to 74% on heavy plate products, and up to 23% on hot-rolled steels. This is part of the broader global steel trade war. Panjiva data shows Chinese exports to the EU have already dropped by 82% for heavy plate exports in August vs. September 2015 peaks, and by 89% for hot-rolled products. Globally China’s steel exports fell 6% in August on a year earlier, with exports to the U.S. down 43% and the EU down 21%. Yet, China’s coated steel exports increased 20% in August – perhaps signifying the next battleground.
