Container handling through the Port of New York and New Jersey jumped by 15% on a year earlier in September. That was the fastest rate of growth since March 2015. Imports of loaded containers climbed by 13%, outpacing the 7% growth in exports – a pattern seen across the country. The import expansion likely reflected larger vessels arriving after the raising of the Bayonne Bridge. It doesn’t reflect a significant effect from the Panama Canal widening. Incoming traffic from China and Hong Kong rose by just 4.9%, only just above the 4.8% growth in imports from Europe.
