The Paris Motor Show will see many new electric vehicle models being introduced by mainstream manufacturers. The key challenge for successful commercialization is access to batteries. Panjiva data shows U.S. imports of lithium oxide and carbonate jumped 126% in August and 74% in September, but is highly dependent on Chile. China is more self-sufficient. China’s exports of batteries increased just 5% in the quarter to July 31, while U.S. imports jumped 42%, and shows signs of increasing further through September.
