Maersk’s acquisition of Hamburg Sud has been approved by the European Commission. As expected this has included restrictions on activity on Europe-south America lanes, with Hamburg Sud required to exit activities on five routes. Panjiva data shows that on one of these, Brazil-Mediterranean, the combined entity would have had a 26% market share, rising to 52.8% when combined with 2M alliance partner MSC. The next waymarker for the deal is an announcement of financial terms, which may occur at Maersk’s next financial report on May 11.
