Global coffee exports surged 16.6% higher on a year earlier in October, Panjiva analysis of ICO data shows, marking the third straight month of growth and the fastest rate of expansion since July 2017. The recovery was led by a 29.5% jump in shipments from Brazil which have shrugged off both weak harvest conditions a year ago as well as port strikes flagged in Panjiva research of May 30. Shipments from Vietnam also continued their rapid expansion and have now climbed 23.3% higher in the 12 months to Oct. 31 vs. a year earlier.

Much of the increased European demand for Brazilian coffee has been accounted for by Mondelez’s Douwe Egberts subsidiary whose imports from Brazil surged 3.9x higher than a year earlier in the third quarter. Other major importers include Lavazza SpA whose imports grew by 37.8% and Tchibo GmbH’s which increased by 31.7%.
