Montreal Deals With Success While Rupert’s Capacity-Led Growth Boom Slows

Congestion at the Port of Montreal has led some terminal operators to apply increased gate fees and extend opening hours going into the peak shipping season. That’s been driven by demand growth rather than disruptions, but nonetheless needs to be dealt with quickly to avoid the kind of business loss seen by Felixstowe in the U.K. Container handling at Montreal rose 21% in July led by a 28% surge in imports. Extra capacity may be needed and could draw in extra demand. A 28% rise in handling in the past 12 months through the Port of Prince Rupert followed capacity expansion in spring 2017....
