New Zealand’s exports fell 1% in December on a year earlier, the fifth drop in six months but 3.5% points better than economists expected. A 13% expansion in exports to China appears to have driven the surprise, with timber exports a key area of success – exports expanded 94% in the three months to November 30. Further growth may fall foul of a minor trade argument with China – it cut milk imports after New Zealand restricted Chinese steel exports.
