Norfolk’s Trucking Folk Unhappy as Import Growth Drives Congestion

Corp - Ports 909 Mode - Containerized 1524 Mode - Seaborne 1845 Mode - Truck 75 U.S. 5399

Congestion for outbound trucking from the Port of Norfolk has led to driver protests, and will require a new system of slot reservations and investment in new chassis to fix. Long-term congestion can lead container-lines to withdraw services, though that is some way off yet. Import growth of 5% on a year earlier in the three months to February 28 likely accelerated to 15% in March on the basis of the first three weeks’ data. The largest container-lines using the port in the past year have been Hapag-Lloyd (16%), CMA-CGM (14%) and Maersk (11%).
