Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) will aim to rein in food price inflation by “opening corn imports to have more competition”. Food inflation is spreading across emerging markets with some, including Russia and Argentina, using export restrictions rather than import liberalization. The average corn import value per ton in Mexico climbed 14.4% in May versus April to hit the highest since July 2013. Demand in volume terms increased by 15.8% year over year in May.
