Container handling through South Africa’s ports climbed 9% in December, marking a recovery from storm disruptions earlier in the fourth quarter and bringing the full year total to 4.6 million TEUs. That was a 6% rise in handling for the year, with further growth possible in 2018 if the CFTA trade deal can be signed with South Africa’s regional partners. The leading container-lines operating on South Africa-to-U.S. routes in 2017 were MSC (56% of the total) and Maersk (39% including Safmarine).
