South Africa’s ports had a mixed August. Total cargo handling fell 11% to the lowest since December 2013 in weight terms. That likely reflects a 23% drop in break-bulk handling at Saldana Bay, which is led by iron ore shipments. By contrast container handling jumped 22% to the highest in over three years. While the best performance was from local handling, international exports climbed 24%. The largest exports to the U.S. are aluminum and wine, while to China and India they are gold and coal, Panjiva data shows.
