South Africa’s Shipping Surge Still Has Few Liner Choices

Container handling through South Africa’s ports grew by 10% in January, bettering the 9% of December, as a result of a 12% improvement in exports. The shipping choices for exporters remain limited though despite the growth in shipments. On U.S.-bound routes MSC is dominant, and increased its handling in January by 71% compared to a 41% rise in shipments overall. As a result it, along with Maersk and its Safmarine affiliate, had a 96% share of traffic on the route in January. The competition authorities will presumably hope their approval of the creation of ONE may make a difference later...
