Spanish ports’ handling of containers climbed 11% on a year earlier in May. That was the fastest rate since February 2016, and was led by a 14% jump in transit volumes. Shippers may have accelerated volumes in anticipation of strikes that took effect during June. The most recent strikes in March led to a 4.5% drop in export volumes on a year earlier. Strikes shouldn’t return in July as the unions and employers reached an agreement on June 29.
