Sweeter Puget Sounds As Tacoma’s Asian Handling Accelerates

Container handling at the ports of Seattle and Tacoma increased 10% on a year earlier in March, with import growth of 26% outstripping the 9% export expansion. That is a similar pattern to that seen in California, and offset the 13% drop in Alaskan sailings. Imports from China into Tacoma led the way, with a 40% jump. That suggests a loss of share for Seattle which only saw 1% growth. Yet, it should mean the loss of market share to east coast ports via the Panama Canal has subsided.
