Canada’s October trade deficit was the lowest since January, and was nearly a quarter below that expected by economists. Exports increased 2% on a year earlier, driven by increases in energy, forestry products and autos. The C$509 million increase in energy exports may be sustained following the OPEC decision. Forestry exports, which have increased in all but three months since January 2013, may come under threat from a new softwood lumber trade case.
