U.K. exports jumped 11% in August on a year earlier, according to official figures, yet the increase was less than economists had expected. As a consequence the trade deficit was nearly 20% bigger than expected. U.S. exports fell 2% and may struggle further. Panjiva data shows seaborne export growth fell to 4% in September from 12% in August. Export managers surveyed by the CBI have also become more pessimistic. Still, sterling may rescue exports as it weakens further as the government proceeds with its Brexit plans.
