Union Pacific’s railroad hub in Memphis, Tn. has congestion issues due to a shortage of truck chassis for onward shipments. U.S. seaborne imports destined for the 200km radius around Memphis only increased 5.0% in 4Q 2018, suggesting Union Pacific’s challenges relate more to shipments destined for and from elsewhere in the country. The forwarders that have seen the fastest rate of growth in seaborne traffic heading to the region, and so may face challenges in ensuring effective deliveries, include K+N – with 34.3% year over year growth – and Honour Lane which grew 28.7%.
