The Santos Port Authority in Brazil is attempting to attract more trade from China via engagement in the extended Belt and Road Initiative. A reboot in growth is needed with shipments from China to Santos down 1.4% year over year in the 12 months to May 31. Assuming Brazilian trade with China doesn’t increase, Santos may need to attract shipments away from other ports. Major importers to Brazil ship outside of Santos are focused on consumer electricals currently include UTC with nearly 4,600 TEUs shipped in the past 12 months, Electrolux with 2,600 TEUs and Whirlpool with 1,220 TEUs.
