Bayer’s improved bid for Monsanto could continue to consolidation in U.S. agricultural chemicals. Both Monsanto and main competitor (and fellow bid target) Syngenta have struggled to grow – Panjiva data shows Monsanto’s seaborne imports were 11% lower in the first eight months of the year on a year earlier. There may be hope – higher corn prices may have driven a 82% jump in Syngenta imports in August – admittedly the slowest month of the year as harvests come in.
