Maersk’s APM Terminals started operations as its Lazaro Cardenas facility last week following development work that started in 2011. The terminal will eventually handle 4.1 million TEU annually, increasing the port’s current throughput 9.5-fold, and making it four times larger than Manzanillo and Veracruz. The port has seen lacklustre growth recently – it was the second-slowest expanding Mexican port in in the past quarter, Panjiva data shows.
