China plans to start exporting corn (maize) for the first time in 10 years, Reuters reports, due to a surplus of the crop. The U.S. recently launched a complaint to the WTO about China’s support for its domestic grain industry. The U.S. may have the most to lose – Panjiva data shows much of the 15% growth in exports of corn in July came from South Korea (37%) and Thailand (17%). Competition from China could further hurt exporters including DeLong and ADM via prices, which are already 25% below their peaks.
